The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a task-based test to measure English language proficiency of a person who wants to study, work or immigrate to a country where English is used as a medium of communication. It assesses candidates on the basis of four language skills i.e listening, reading, writing and speaking. The result is granted as a nine-band scale to pinpoint level of proficiency, where band-score 1 corresponds to non-user and band-score 9 corresponds to expert level.

Candidates are provided a set of four sample recordings of native English speakers. They are then required to answer a questionnaire about those recordings.

Assessors grade pupils on the ability to understand the main ideas and facts, the attitudes and opinions of speakers, the reason for a statement and the ability to understand the evolution of ideas.

The Reading section consists of 40 questions, specifically formulated to test a wide range of reading skills. These include reading for main ideas, gist, detail, skimming, understanding logical argument and recognising writers' purpose, opinions and attitudes.

They are classified into two categories:

IELTS Academic Test - This testing includes three long texts which are a collection of both descriptive and factual as well as discursive and logical texts. These are excerpts from different books, magazines, journals and newspapers. They are targeted for a non-specialist audience but suitable for university entering students and professionals applying for jobs overseas.

IELTS General Training Test - These include texts from notices, advertisements, books, magazines, newspapers, company handbooks and guidelines. These are specifically all those materials that one encounters on a daily basis in an English-speaking environment.

IELTS Academic Test - Topics are specifically suited to and of general interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students and job applicants.

IELTS General Training - Topics included are of general interest to all.

The speaking power is evaluated through this component. The test is recorded and includes four parts.

Part 1 - The examiner will ask certain general questions about yourself and certain familiar topics, such as home, family, studies, work and interests. The time for this part is four to five minutes.

Part 2 - The tester is required to speak about a topic provided during the test in writing . A preparation time for one minute is given and then the tester has to speak about the topic for two minutes. The examiner will ask some questions after the tester has finished speaking.

Part 3 - Elaborate discussion about abstract ideas and issues is carried out between the examiner and the tester about the topic in Part 2 through another question-answer session. This will test a person’s ability to understand a topic and give his feedback. This part of the test lasts for four to five minutes.
